When a drain overflows
An overflowing gully trap, the drain grate outside near the laundry or bathroom, is one of the clearest signs of a sewer blockage. It means wastewater can’t get past a point in the line and is backing up to the lowest opening.
We clear the blockage with jetting or mechanical clearing, then check what caused it. Tree roots, a damaged section of pipe or a build-up of fat and wipes are the usual culprits. If the problem turns out to be in the SA Water main rather than your pipe, we’ll tell you.
Your pipe or SA Water’s?
As a general rule, the property owner is responsible for the sewer drain on their property and SA Water looks after the main. Street stormwater and kerbs are the City of Salisbury’s. When we inspect a blockage, we can usually tell you which side of the line it’s on.
